Challenge Yourself!

If you’ve been keeping up with my blogs, you will remember that I wrote about whether or not one change in your life could make a difference. Here’s the latest news!

Oh my goodness! I’m thinking I have to change my answer to YES! One little change in your daily routine can change your life. You’ve got to try it!  I started off with:

Week 1 & 2 – ½ hour walk after a ½ meditation and grateful journal writing

Week 3 & 4 – I’ve moved up to a one hour with meditation and writing

The first day of week 5, I decided to tackle some stairs that I noticed as I was walking during week 3 & 4. This was my next challenge. Not only did I notice but I told someone I was going to do it. I obviously told the wrong person because he kept asking when the big day was. I think we call them our accountability partner. Yep, a pain in the butt brother really but nevertheless a long distance coach all the way from Manitoba.

Crazy right?

Here are some of the pictures just to show you how many I did.

I thought I was finished when I saw the bridge (81 stairs done). You know those kinds of stairs where it’s open and you can see everything underneath it and as you climb higher and higher your fear of heights kick in. Yep those are the ones! The ones you avoid always, always, always.

I’m looking at the bridge with a dozen more stairs. I look underneath and I’m thinking to myself ‘I can’t do this’. What if I fall, pass out, trip, or lose my phone no less. Then this quiet little voice says, ‘you got this Lucie’.

Yep, I did it! And guess what was on the other side? More bloomin’ stairs! This I was not anticipating. As I stood on the bridge and took a picture of Guelph, I thought about turning around and going back to where I came from. First of all, there were more stairs in front of me, but I also didn’t know where I was. I’m relatively new to Guelph and the street above the remainder of the stairs was unknown territory. Well it seemed to be a day of challenges so off I go to climb in total, 101 stairs.

I found my way home 10 minutes later to climb another 25 stairs to get into my condo.  I would have thought that I’m totally done in but the success of the challenge has me motivated to work, do more, accomplish more rather than flopping on the sofa. It’s a good thing I disconnected cable months ago because flicking on the TV would have been my next move.

Today’s challenge reminded me of my trip to Peru. It was the only vacation I took that I lost weight because of all the stair climbing we did. Everything was on a mountain – climbing was the only way you got there, especially when you got to Machu Picchu. Learn more about Peru here!

As I’m writing this though, I decided to look up the definition of stairs – a set of steps leading from one floor to another – in this case for me, a set of steps leading from one accomplishment to another.  If you haven’t challenged yourself lately, try something new or follow me along on my walks. Just pick that one little thing that you’ve been thinking of doing for a long time, and set a date for tomorrow, and DO IT because you can!

I’d love to help you set your goals and reach them with ease! I will customize a program specifically for your needs and plan out how we will surpass your wildest dreams!! Schedule a Meet & Chat with me, I can’t wait to talk to you!

Change TWO things and Watch your Life Transform in 2 months!

What is standing in the way of you reaching your dreams? Are there areas in your life that need just a little bit more attention that would make all the difference you have been wishing for?

Whether you want a transformation in your health, your business, your job, your family or with your closest relationships, there are two things that can transform your whole world in as little as just 2 months!

Transformation Tip #1: Put Yourself First

I know, this sounds harsh and downright impossible when you have a demanding boss, young children to care for and a spouse to cherish but this is the most integral part of your whole transformational journey. Even for a small window of time every day, you must put yourself first. You have to set some time aside for yourself to allow the incredible YOU to emerge (or re-emerge).

What area of your life is ready for transformation?

Take steps to ready yourself for these changes and then fly! For example, if you are wanting to experience a health and body transformation, you must put yourself first long enough to carve out a window of time to joyfully move that body and prep some healthy meals.

If you’re not quite able to wrap your head around putting yourself first, focus on the fact that your family will benefit from having the best version of you, ever!

If you are developing a new soul business, you must find time in your day to put yourself first, so that you can make waves with your new venture! And again, any benefits you are experiencing personally, will naturally trickle out to your family and friends.

Take some prime transformational time to devote energy to yourself and your desires, because we often let ourselves have the left-over minutes of the day, but by then, we are usually exhausted and have nothing left to give to ourselves.

Transformation Tip #2: Act as though your transformation is complete!

If you were already at your perfect body size and shape, what would you do to maintain it? If you were already eating a clean diet, it would be easy to stay on that eating plan.

If you already have a thriving business, what would you be doing to keep it producing? You wouldn’t be worrying about the small details and getting caught up on the day to day things that make you busy, you would be focusing on the larger visionary pieces that make you money!

Create space in your life to envision the things you want the most and then take these two steps to make it happen.

Just imagine how much your life can change in a very short period of time if you take these tips seriously. And think about how good you would feel NOW if you had only started 2 MONTHS AGO!!!! So start now. You will thank yourself for it!

Decluttering for Mental Health

Look around you. How much “stuff” have you accumulated over the years that you do not need for your imminent survival?

Some items may have been purchased because they were on sale or the advertisement promised an amazing benefit that just wasn’t so. Some things used to serve a purpose, but now they just collect dust. Some items are kept for sentimental value, and others you don’t even notice anymore, because they have been there for so long.

But how does all of this clutter make you feel? It adds chaos to your every day life, because it is not visually appealing to look at and this stuff tends to just be in the way.

What about the clutter taking over your office space? This can cause added stress to already crazy days, because there is no space to work or brainstorm or spread out a notebook for fresh ideas. This adds more stress than is necessary and can really affect how you feel by the time you head home (to more clutter!)

“UCLA’s Center on Everyday Lives and Families (CELF) explored the relationship between 32 families and the thousands of objects in their homes and concluded that clutter has a strong effect on mood and self-esteem. Women were particularly stressed out by the presence of clutter. In fact, according to the CEFL study, the amount of stress they experience at home is directly proportional to the amount of stuff they and their family have accumulated. Similar to multitasking, physical clutter overloads your senses, makes you feel stressed, and impairs your ability to think creatively.”1

What is the solution??

It’s time to start giving away some of the items you know that you will never use again, haven’t used in months, or never really liked in the first place.

Here are two questions to ask yourself when beginning the task of decluttering:

Does it bring me joy?
Does it serve a functional purpose?

If you answered no to either of these questions, out it goes!!

The best way to get rid of your items is to donate them to others who might be in need of your things. Then you can feel as though the money that you spent on various items isn’t going into the garbage (and filling up our landfills) but that someone else might benefit from your generosity. For example, find a Goodwill, Value Village, Salvation Army, Women and Children’s shelter, or similar, to donate your gently used items to.

Here is a great way to ease yourself into getting rid of some clutter:

Over the course of a few weeks, you can really pare down your excess belongings by subscribing to this activity:

Day 1: Get rid of one item (it can be just one shirt, or one small appliance, one pair of shoes or a Christmas decoration you haven’t used in years).
Day 2: Get rid of two items!
Day 3: Get rid of three items!

…until you get to Day 30, and you rid yourself of 30 items that are cluttering up your space. Choose items that do not bring you joy and/or no longer serve a functional purpose!

Other ways to declutter:
• you can sell items online
• have a garage sale
• swap items with your friends

Make it fun! Getting rid of clutter doesn’t have to be traumatic, but it can sometimes feel stressful because we worry that we’ll need something again in the future and won’t have it. Start slowly on Day 1, and you will begin to feel a sense of lightness and excitement when you can see a bit more living space coming into view, not to mention your good deeds of donating your goods to someone who may get more joy from them than you do.

Crumpets and Tea Anyone?

You may want to think twice about your beverage choice!
Your cup of tea could be filled with pesticides. Yes, one more thing to worry about.

The English ceremony of having afternoon tea dates back hundreds of years, to the 1650’s, when ships would carry tea, beautiful porcelain tea pots and cups from China and Japan to Europe. Since tea leaves were extremely expensive, it immediately became popular with the Royal Family and aristocracy. But hundreds of years ago, pesticides were not used to propagate the growth of tea.1

Sadly, now most conventionally grown tea is doused in pesticides while it is growing, to fend off any number of pests – such as insects, mold or weeds. Most tea is not washed before it is distributed into individual tea bags, and as you would suspect, the pesticides are waiting for you right there in that cup.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has been testing various tea brands for the last several years. Their findings are both shocking and scary – 1 in 4 teas had pesticides in them, at levels above what is allowed for human consumption.2

CBC’s Marketplace further investigated, and found that, for example, Uncle Lee’s Legends of China Green Tea had an incredible 22 pesticides in it, with 6 over the allowable limit.3

You can find the full Marketplace Tea Test Results here: http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/blog/full-tea-test-results

The FoodBabe also reports that “A recent third-party analysis by Glaucus Research and discussed here found that 91 percent of Celestial Seasonings tea tested had pesticide residues exceeding the U.S. limits. For example, Sleepytime Kids Goodnight Grape Herbal contained 0.26 ppm of propachlor, which is a known carcinogen under California’s Propsition 65.”4

This is troubling news to those of us who enjoy one or even several cups of tea throughout the day. Since it is such a perfect snack time choice at the office, to just enjoy a few minutes with your favourite tea, and step away from the stress piling up on your desk, there must be a solution.

Here is a list of bagged tea that is safe, put together by David Wolfe:2

•    Red Rose
•    Numi Tea
•    Rishi Tea
•    EDEN Organic
•    Organic Stash
•    Choice Organic Teas
•    Two Leaves
•    Organic Tazo
•    Organic Traditional Medicinals

Additionally, check the package on some of the flavoured or more fancy teas, it’s important to also avoid added flavourings and GMO’s. Always buy organic and non-GMO, and if you can, try white tea. It is actually made from younger leaves, so they have less time to be exposed to pesticides before they are harvested for processing.

If you can buy organic loose leaf tea, and use a glass or stainless steel infuser, you are also avoiding the potential exposure to chemicals in the tea bags. (I know, what next?!)

“According to Dr. Mercola, many “paper tea bags are treated with epichlorohydrin, a compound mainly used in the production of epoxy resins. Considered a potential carcinogen by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health2 (NIOSH), epichlorohydrin is also used as a pesticide. When epichlorohydrin comes in contact with water, it hydrolyzes to 3-MCPD, which has been shown to cause cancer in animals. It has also been implicated in infertility (it has a spermatoxic effect in male rats) and suppressed immune function.”4

Check out this amazing chart from The FoodBabe, to cross reference the safety of your tea.

Definitely continue to have mini-vacations at work with a cup of tea, but be sure to choose your tea from the safe list!

You are Perfect just the way you are!

What is your internal dialogue saying? What has become the internal “record player” of your subconscious mind that informs your consciousness? What do you “listen to” inside of your mind all day?
Many people experience thoughts of not being good enough, feeling judged, feeling unworthy, unheard and even unloved. But in reality, many times this pattern has been developed through several isolated experiences throughout life, and the subconscious has held onto these unhealed circumstances. This continues to inform you of un-truths in present day and affects every aspect of your life.

Let’s take a few minutes to re-write the story that plays in your mind. We must over-ride the conversation, because the majority of the storyline is fear-based. You may just have the same old story accidentally stuck on repeat, and you’ve never taken a minute to really question those old words. Chances are, they are no longer true (or never were!) and you now have the conscious ability to press EJECT (on the tape cassette) or DELETE (if you’re digital!!)

5 Truths you need to hear EVERY Day! (Okay, 6!)

You are enough. You always have been. It’s time to realize that everything you do is amazing, but it’s about BE-ing. Your being, your very existence is enough.

You are so loved. Not just by your children, your significant other, your family, your friends, your co-workers, your neighbours but by the ENTIRE UNIVERSE. And, your SELF.

You are more valuable than you realize. Every day you touch the lives of so many in numerous, precious ways. Begin to notice your own compassion, empathy and generosity in exchanges with others, and appreciate yourself how others do.

You are needed. Not just in a physical way, as in “Mom, I’m hungry!!” But in a way that the universe has placed you here right now for specific reasons that we may not fully understand or be aware of yet. Your very existence is on purpose!

You are so beautiful and shine with love. Your energy is a gift to others, and your inner spirit glows from your human body and illuminates the world with your love.

You are worthy of abundance, health and love. Accept the good things into your life. Open to them, as they are waiting to appear. And they are most likely to appear when you are in APPRECIATION of yourself and in LOVE with yourself!

Now it’s time to write your very own love letter to your SELF. Write to your inner spirit, that powerful person inside that may have forgotten how amazing you are. Tell yourself all of the things you love about YOU! Tell YOU how strong and beautiful you are. Tell YOU how you are smart, gifted and compassionate. Make a list of your skills, strengths and successes to prove to yourself that you have valuable assets. (And if you have trouble getting started, copy down the list above to get you going!)
BUT remember that this love letter is only a stepping stone to switch the dialogue in your mind into something more positive, to live with on a daily basis. Because you are ALREADY PERFECT exactly how you are!! You just need to realize it.

Are there toxins lurking in your detergent that are making you sick or gain weight?

What is in your detergent? Have you ever read the ingredients?

Could it be making you sick? Could it be attributed to weight gain?

Conventional detergents are filled with an incredible amount of toxins and industrial chemicals that we should not be breathing in, adding to the environment, exposing ourselves to, or putting on our skin once our clothes are dry.

Theses toxins are part of a variety of indoor pollutants that contribute to the decline of our overall health. Because we spend up to 80-90% of our time indoors, the indoor pollution level is something that we need to become much more aware of, rather than just the outdoor pollution that we’ve come to hear about on the news.

Laundry detergents, cleaning products such as window cleaners, sink, bathtub and toilet cleaners, and various waxes and polishes are extremely powerful chemicals that can cause a great deal of toxicity in the body.

For example, Dr. Mercola explains that1:

Most laundry detergents in your typical grocery store contain:

•    Petroleum distillates (aka napthas), which have been linked to cancer
•    Phenols, which can cause toxicity throughout the entire body
•    Artificial fragrances, which have been linked to various toxic effects on fish and mammals
•    Phosphates, which stimulate the growth of certain marine plants when they’re released into the environment and contribute to unbalanced ecosystems
•    Optical brighteners, which can be toxic to fish and can cause bacterial mutations and allergic reactions

So what happens to these toxins?

The toxins that we are exposed to end up in our bodies, and the liver and detox organs try very hard to expel the toxins as efficiently as possible. The problem is that it’s not just one toxin that our body has to clean up. There is a residual effect of toxic build up from our convenience-fuelled lives. Everything from the Keurig pods you use for your morning coffee, to the fluorinated water you bathe in, the toothpaste you use, the make-up you apply, the upholstery in your car, and the fumes from your commute to work add a toxic load to your body. And that’s before you even get to work!

So the body struggles to rid these compounding toxins from the body and begins to get overloaded. The toxins are stored in our fat cells, as a means of protecting the internal organs from the chemical burden of this exposure. As we are struggling to process the higher load of toxins, our bodies have to store more and more toxins as a method of self-preservation. Therefore, this leads to weight gain, and a poor-health cycle that is difficult to overcome.

What is the Solution?

First of all, stop adding toxins into your lifestyle!! Go through all of your regular personal hygiene and cleaning products, and read the labels. If you can’t identify an ingredient, or can’t read it – don’t use it!!

You would be surprised how well a little baking soda and vinegar can clean almost anything.

And there are many choices of natural detergents, cleaning supplies and organic cosmetics at your natural health food store.

How do I detoxify my body?

Your body is very intelligent, and it wants to be free of a toxic load. However, if you try to detoxify too quickly, you may inadvertently re-toxify your body. You need the toxins to leave the fat cells, but there must also be energy and space to actually move the toxins out – i.e. a properly functioning liver, kidneys and intestines.

Start by having a glass of water with lemon each morning upon rising. Then drink 2-3 more tall glasses of water. And then about 6-7 more throughout the day! Most people are chronically dehydrated. Staying hydrated and letting things move about easily is critical to detoxifying your body.

Then, increase your intake of organic vegetables and fruit. They are an excellent way to crowd out any more toxic, processed foods that find their way into our day.

Green tea is a great way to add an additional detoxifier, as well as chlorella, spirulina and organic green juices.

It’s Time to Trade in Your Microwave!

Have you ever stopped to wonder how your microwave can cook food so quickly? What technology is used to generate the heat?

Dr. Edward Group DC, NP, DACBN, DCBCN, DABFM, explains that “A microwave is a form of non-ionizing radiation. As a matter of contrast, ionizing radiation changes the electromagnetic nature of atoms, or ionizes them. This alters the way they interact with other atoms and molecules around them. X-rays, gamma radiation, and nuclear medicine (CT scans, barium swallows, and mammograms) are types of ionizing radiation. Your food is being zapped by high-frequency waves of heat.”1

This radiation exposure changes the structure of the food you are heating up, and cause extreme nutrient loss, as the food is cooked at such high temperatures for a short period of time. The enzymes that are naturally occurring are denatured and can no longer give you the nutrients they would in their raw form.

Additionally, microwaves are made with an assortment of chemicals and carcinogens that are released into the cooking area, and ultimately your food, at high temperatures.

Hans Hertel, a Swiss scientist, further explains the damage caused by microwaves: “There are no atoms, molecules or cells of any organic system able to withstand such a violent, destructive power for any extended period of time, not even in the low energy range of milliwatts… This is how microwave cooking heat is generated – friction from this violence in water molecules. Structures of molecules are torn apart, molecules are forcefully deformed (called structural isomerism) and thus become impaired in quality.”2

What is the Solution?

The best way to eat your fruit and vegetables is in their raw form. In this way, they have not been exposed to damaging heat and cooking practices and are able to provide the highest, most bioavailable amount of nutrients possible. If you must cook your food, steam it for the shortest time possible to maintain its integrity.

Is Microwave Popcorn Killing You?

Why on earth would microwave popcorn be harmful? It’s just popped corn, right?

Sadly, it’s a lot more than that.

If you pop pure, organic corn kernels in your air popper, it tastes incredibly different from microwaved varieties. You can choose options with cheese or butter flavours, or sour cream and onion, or even dill pickle. However, you would never find a trace of cheese or butter, or onions or dill herb in the ingredients, as the flavours are created by chemicals in the lab!

The oils used are genetically modified and the corn is doused in pesticides while it is growing.

Added to that are preservatives, MSG, artificial colours and a host of other toxic additives.

Vani Hari, The Food Babe, investigated Microwave Popcorn and she created this amazing graphic to summarize the various harmful ingredients:

What is TBHQ to preserve freshness?

Vani reported that “TBHQ is a chemical made from butane (a very toxic gas) and can only be used at a rate of 0.02 percent of the total oil in a product. Why is there a limit to this? Maybe because eating only 1 gram of this toxic preservative has been shown to cause all sorts of issues, from ADHD in children, to asthma, allergies and dermatitis to dizziness and even has caused stomach cancer in laboratory animals.”1

Additionally, Vani also tells us that the bag is lined with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is the same chemical that is found in teflon pots and pans. It has been linked to infertility and cancer.

In an interview with Fox News, Dr. Oz explains that the smell is actually a chemical called diacetyl, a synthetic butter flavouring added to the product. People who work in the factories developed a problem called “popcorn lung” from inhaling the gases with the diacetyl in it. Dr. Oz said even people who make microwaved popcorn frequently can develop lung problems.”2

The Solution? Make your own!

Air poppers are inexpensive and you can purchase organic popping corn at your local health food store. You can add various toppings to keep it interesting… extra virgin olive oil, cayenne pepper, a bit of maple syrup, dill flakes, or organic dark chocolate chips! Be creative and enjoy your non-toxic popcorn!

Toxic Microwave Popcorn
V

Eco-friendly or not?

How many plastic water bottles do you use in a week? Probably many more than you think and probably at a much higher detriment to yourself and our environment.

Plastic water bottles are made with Bisphenol A (BPA), a very toxic material that makes the plastic hard and clear. This leaches into the water and obviously makes its way into your body. The bottle caps and seals are not recyclable and they end up finding their way into our environment as litter where they are eaten by birds and animals. Bottled water does not have to adhere to regulations to ensure its purity or safety for consumption, which is also very concerning.1

Sadly, according to National Geographic, “Plastic trash is found in 90 percent of seabirds. The rate is growing steadily as global production of plastic increases.”2 One bird who perished and was later examined had 200 pieces of plastic in its system.

There are also the floating islands of plastic in our oceans which was once thought to be an urban legend. An area in the north Pacific Ocean called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, gathers and collects garbage. This area houses 705,000 tons of floating garbage – the majority being made of plastics that are not biodegradable. Additionally, much of it sinks, so just imagine how much of a trash heap is also building up on the ocean floor!3

What is the solution?

Try to reduce your consumption of plastic water bottles or stop using them altogether! There are many glass and stainless steel options that are reusable and can make a difference to our environment and to you! Consider purchasing a purification system in your home to ensure your tap water is safe and delicious ~ not only for your health ~ but for the health of our planet.
