Is Microwave Popcorn Killing You?

Why on earth would microwave popcorn be harmful? It’s just popped corn, right?

Sadly, it’s a lot more than that.

If you pop pure, organic corn kernels in your air popper, it tastes incredibly different from microwaved varieties. You can choose options with cheese or butter flavours, or sour cream and onion, or even dill pickle. However, you would never find a trace of cheese or butter, or onions or dill herb in the ingredients, as the flavours are created by chemicals in the lab!

The oils used are genetically modified and the corn is doused in pesticides while it is growing.

Added to that are preservatives, MSG, artificial colours and a host of other toxic additives.

Vani Hari, The Food Babe, investigated Microwave Popcorn and she created this amazing graphic to summarize the various harmful ingredients:

What is TBHQ to preserve freshness?

Vani reported that “TBHQ is a chemical made from butane (a very toxic gas) and can only be used at a rate of 0.02 percent of the total oil in a product. Why is there a limit to this? Maybe because eating only 1 gram of this toxic preservative has been shown to cause all sorts of issues, from ADHD in children, to asthma, allergies and dermatitis to dizziness and even has caused stomach cancer in laboratory animals.”1

Additionally, Vani also tells us that the bag is lined with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is the same chemical that is found in teflon pots and pans. It has been linked to infertility and cancer.

In an interview with Fox News, Dr. Oz explains that the smell is actually a chemical called diacetyl, a synthetic butter flavouring added to the product. People who work in the factories developed a problem called “popcorn lung” from inhaling the gases with the diacetyl in it. Dr. Oz said even people who make microwaved popcorn frequently can develop lung problems.”2

The Solution? Make your own!

Air poppers are inexpensive and you can purchase organic popping corn at your local health food store. You can add various toppings to keep it interesting… extra virgin olive oil, cayenne pepper, a bit of maple syrup, dill flakes, or organic dark chocolate chips! Be creative and enjoy your non-toxic popcorn!

Eco-friendly or not?

How many plastic water bottles do you use in a week? Probably many more than you think and probably at a much higher detriment to yourself and our environment.

Plastic water bottles are made with Bisphenol A (BPA), a very toxic material that makes the plastic hard and clear. This leaches into the water and obviously makes its way into your body. The bottle caps and seals are not recyclable and they end up finding their way into our environment as litter where they are eaten by birds and animals. Bottled water does not have to adhere to regulations to ensure its purity or safety for consumption, which is also very concerning.1

Sadly, according to National Geographic, “Plastic trash is found in 90 percent of seabirds. The rate is growing steadily as global production of plastic increases.”2 One bird who perished and was later examined had 200 pieces of plastic in its system.

There are also the floating islands of plastic in our oceans which was once thought to be an urban legend. An area in the north Pacific Ocean called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, gathers and collects garbage. This area houses 705,000 tons of floating garbage – the majority being made of plastics that are not biodegradable. Additionally, much of it sinks, so just imagine how much of a trash heap is also building up on the ocean floor!3

What is the solution?

Try to reduce your consumption of plastic water bottles or stop using them altogether! There are many glass and stainless steel options that are reusable and can make a difference to our environment and to you! Consider purchasing a purification system in your home to ensure your tap water is safe and delicious ~ not only for your health ~ but for the health of our planet.

Butter versus Margarine – The Epic Battle… Do either deserve to win?

You hear the commercials… “Use margarine to protect your heart” or “lower your cholesterol with margarine”. Have you ever stopped to wonder how margarine could ever protect your heart or lower your cholesterol?

I have. Let’s discuss…

Margarine is made of vegetable oil. Generally, “the cheaper, the better,” say the food industry CFO’s. So they choose canola, soy or cottonseed as the base oils. However, these oils are liquid at room temperature, so they must go through processing to make their oils solid and spreadable – called hydrogenation. This process happens at high heat, destroying any last redeeming qualities of the oils, and creates trans fats. They can label the margarine trans-fat free because the oils started off as not being trans fats.

Some margarine manufacturers add plant sterols, so they can claim that the plant particles help to lower your cholesterol. Plant sterols are substances that occur naturally in fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds that help to prevent cholesterol from gathering in arteries ~ you should just eat the real foods to get that benefit!

Added to that are the artificial colors, preservatives, chemical alterations and various other toxins to create the finished process.

So what about butter?

Butter is solidified animal fat. Although it is non-hydrogenated, think of the source of the product. The cow is fed antibiotics to “keep her healthy” and is kept in a cramped stall for her entire life. She is artificially inseminated, gives birth and immediately has her calf taken from her. She is fed hormones so she may continue to produce milk. Since her baby has been taken from her, biologically, she no longer needs to produce milk.

Her milk is pasteurized, beaten into cream, separated from the whole milk, and churned into butter. The butter has essential vitamins and minerals in it, and is definitely better than the manufactured margarine, but it is still a saturated fat. A better choice would be choosing butter from cruelty-free farms, with free-range, grass fed cows. Is this even the best choice?

We have to ask… what about coconut oil?

The best choice you can make is to choose extra virgin, cold pressed coconut oil. It is made of medium-chain fatty acids, which have a healing effect on the brain, cells and joints. It is beneficial for your skin and hair;  has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties; helps to lower blood cholesterol and actually helps you lose fat.

The winner…. coconut oil by a landslide!!

Walk it Off

You’re sitting at your desk, you can see out the windows on the far side of your office that the sun is shining! It’s almost April and you are just itching to get outside and move!

But you have piles and piles of work to do, stacked on your desk, and some days you wonder how you aren’t buried alive in paperwork!

And to top it off, most days you quickly heat something up to eat and work right through your lunch! Well that stops NOW!!

Bring your running shoes to work with you and make it a priority to go for a 20 minute walk at lunch. Every day! (Well maybe skip the rainy days!)

Just a short break with cardio movement reduces your stress, stretches your joints, works your muscles and even improves your brain function! The added oxygen that moves through your system from breathing more deeply and moving around is extremely beneficial to all of your body’s systems, including your digestion to absorb the nutrients you just scarfed down!

Walking outdoors is also great for receiving daily Vitamin D, an essential element to our health that we can’t manufacture from food. Sun exposure for short periods when the sun is highest is the best way to absorb Vitamin D, so make sure you are wearing short sleeves.

Ask your colleagues to join you! Make it a fun break for your office friends, and you will begin to notice positive changes in both your physical, mental and emotional health, and also in your satisfaction at work and relationships with your associates!

Advice From a Nutritionist: 5 Things to Remove from Your Diet NOW for Better Health Immediately!

Are you ever confused about what you should and should not eat?

What is okay as a “once-in-a-while” food and what is an “avoid-at-all-cost” food?

Here, we explain the 5 foods you should remove from your diet, and never eat again!

1. Aspartame

Aspartame is a neurotoxin – which means it actually chemically toxifies your brain cells to death. It is used as a sweetener in gum, yogurt, diet drinks and many pre-packaged foods. There are over 92 known side effects associated with aspartame poisoning, such as epileptic seizures, migraines, aggression, heart palpitations, irreversible brain damage, hives, nausea, and blindness. For the whole list, visit http://www.sweetpoison.com/aspartame-side-effects.html

2. Farmed Fish and Factory Raised Meat

Farmed fish are grown in small tanks with high numbers of fish, which makes the water extremely concentrated with excrement and toxins. Fed a diet of antibiotics, corn and growth hormones, (since when do fish eat corn? or antibiotics?) to grow them bigger, faster, they have extremely high toxicity levels. This is very similar to the factory farming of meat, chicken and pork, which should also be avoided. Find a local farmer at your farmer’s market, find out where your food comes from, how the animals are treated, what they are fed and do some research!

3. Fast Food

We have all been there – you’re in the car, running to an appointment, driving home late from work, or just simply starving, and you swing into the drive-thru. While you can make better choices at fast food restaurants than choosing the biggest burger they offer, it is often altogether impossible. The “healthy options” such as salads or vegetables always come with dressings and dips that have rancid fats, high sugar contents and poor ingredients. Keep healthy snacks in your car for emergencies, and plan ahead by bringing an apple, banana or bag of raw nuts with you.

4. Soft Drinks

Just put it down. Pour it down the drain. And leave it at the store. Soft drinks have ZERO nutrient value, and are extremely high in sugar. These drinks actually leave your body in a deficit, because sugar leeches nutrients from the body, and you have to work so hard to expel the toxins and clean up the destruction they cause. Drink WATER!

5. Sugar

Ah, the anti-nutrient. Found not just in candy, sweets and chocolate, but also in breads, pasta, and rice. Sugar has been compared to some of the major drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, as being just as addictive and difficult to quit consuming.

Also, a major reason to kick this out of your diet… Cancer is fed by sugar. It is the number one fuel that drives tumour growth and the spread of this dis-ease. Read more about Otto Warburg, Ph.D’s discovery in 1931 here: http://www.mercola.com/article/sugar/sugar_cancer.htm

So what do you eat instead of these toxins?

Eat foods that do not require a label, that are in their whole, raw form. Yes ~ most of these foods are found in the produce department, as well as the beans, legumes and raw nuts and seeds aisles. Choose organic versions where possible and avoid genetically modified foods. Visit your local farmer’s market for an amazing selection of local, consciously harvested foods, where you can learn more about the origination of your food.

5 Foods to Remove from Your Diet
V

We know there’s lead in your lipstick. Did you know it’s also in your chocolate?

Heavy metal poisoning is one of the greatest un-recognized chronic illnesses that the majority of the population silently deals with. It can cause a medley of symptoms and health issues, such as headaches, brain fog, depression, digestive upset, allergies, neurological impairment and cancer.

Various sources of heavy metals point to pesticides, chemicals and fertilizers applied to crops at various stages of growth and harvest. Also problematic are the municipal water pipes, which are made with various forms of heavy metals, carrying them right to your tap water. These heavy metals end up bioaccumulating in our bodies, specifically in our soft tissues.

Not surprisingly, our food is contaminated, providing exposure to a host of very dangerous heavy metals. Even very low exposure is damaging, and should be carefully avoided.

As You Sow, a consumer health protection organization, commissioned an independent state certified laboratory to measure levels of lead and cadmium in 42 chocolate products available at common retailers.

These laboratory tests have confirmed that chocolate products from many well known, ‘trusted’ brands contain very high levels of lead and cadmium.

So how to avoid these unwanted heavy metals? If you’re going to eat chocolate, we recommend to minimize your frequency and quantity, and check out the results below so that you are making an informed decision as to what you choose to put into your body.

See below for the full list from www.AsYouSow.org/chocolate and additional information.

Great News!

Many new and wonderful ‘things’ are happening in Homeopathy today! For those of you who are just learning about this 200 year old system of medicine, Homeopathy, is safe, gentle and effective to use. In some countries it is mainstream medicine.

Dana Ullmann is a huge proponent of Homeopathic Medicine. In his article, he explains the popularity of Homeopathy in Europe, and in India where it is now considered mainstream medicine. With physicians in the thousands and hundreds of hospitals specializing in Homeopathy, their forward thinking have some hospitals bridging the gap between conventional medicine and homeopathic medicine – all under one roof! Now that’s collaboration for the health of their nation.

http://www.homeopathic.com/Articles/Introduction_to_Homeopathy/The_Present_Status_of_Homeopathy_Internation.html

Interesting enough, in America, Homeopathy was most popular in the early 1900′s. At this time, the popularity of Homeopathy even exceeded Europe and India! So, what is the extent of Homeopathy now on our side of the world?

It’s exploding once again!

In Ontario, Homeopaths will be the first province in Canada, to fall under the Health Regulations Professions Act of 1991, where other health professionals such as MDs, RNs, Naturopaths, Registered Massage Therapists currently reside professionally.

What does this mean to the average Ontarian? The regulation helps to ensure public safety as it relates to Homeopathy. It provides guidelines to ensure your Homeopath has adequate training and standards to provide professional and ethical care to the public. If you are interested in learning more about this regulation, please visit the Transitional Council of the College of Homeopaths of Ontario where many of the guidelines have been defined, with feedback from the public and practitioners still being forwarded for review and sanction.

http://www.collegeofhomeopaths.on.ca/reg.html

One of the biggest concerns regarding Homeopathy is insurance billing. With the regulation, you can be assured that more and more major insurance carriers will be providing Homeopathy coverage for its clients. That’s great news for everyone. Although many understand and trust the benefits of Homeopathy, there is still a large number of our population that is just beginning to learn more about this system of medicine.

Take the time to read reviews about Homeopathy from the experts, like Dana Ullmann. Or call Homeopathic & Holistic Health Practice for your initial consultation. See our website for contact information.
