Success Principle #3: Decide what you want to do, be and have

In Jack Canfield’s book, The Success Principles: How to get from where you are to where you want to be, he talks about a variety of principles, 64 in total, guiding you to get the life you’ve always wanted. In my last 2 blogs, we talked about Success Principle #1 – taking 100% responsibility for your life, along with being clear why you are here on this earth in Success Principle #2.

In Success Principle #3, you must ‘decide what you want to do, what you want to be and what you want to have’.

Jack believes that many people don’t have the life they dream about because there is a lack of clarity when it comes to really knowing what they want. We can all say, I want more money, a big house and a partner that loves me beyond anyone else but what does that really look like.

Getting very clear and concise on your desires helps you to attain that life you’ve always wanted. Deep down inside we’ve always known what we truly wanted but along life’s path, we sometimes get lost, or are lead astray from the interference of those we love or associate with. We end up living someone else’s dream – your mom wanted you to be a nurse – so you become a nurse. Your husband wants you to be a stay at home mom – so you stay home with the kids.

Being clear on what you want helps you to avoid settling for anything less than you deserve.

A good way to begin this is to write a list of 100 things you really want in the categories such as work or career, relationships, health & fitness, finances and hobbies. Just keep making that list – keep adding to it until there is nothing left to add. Take this list and make a shorter list in the 5 categories above, of what you truly want to have. You can add to the category list with a few more options but the whole point is to be clear in each area of your life, the things that you want that will truly make you happy.

Be specific with the list – don’t just say I want a big house. Say I want a 3 bedroom log home in the Muskokas with one wood burning fireplace, lots of windows for natural sunlight etc etc so that you can picture quite clearly your end goal. Do this to all your wants. Once you’ve completed this list, visit it daily as part of your morning routine and focus your life on going there. Stay away from tasks, people or events that take you off track. Stay focused!

At the end of all this, share your vision with those closest to you. Be prepared for those people in your life to either support you wholly or for those that have an opinion that will sway you away from your dreams. Stick to your plan. The point in sharing is not to change what you know, in your heart,  what you truly desire but to share for support and accountability to get it done.

Success Principle #2: Be Clear Why You’re Here

Be clear why you are here. You do have a life’s purpose and there is a way to find out what it is.

All too often we live life one foot in front of the other following a journey that was never ours to begin with. We follow our parents’ wishes, or our good friends’ path or worse yet, we have no direction to follow.

We meander with no specific goal in mind. We go to school, get a job or a career, we get married and raise a family. At some point, some of us stop to wonder, what’s left? The question usually comes to mind once the kids have grown up and left home for a life of their own. You have everything you’ve ever wanted – home, car, vacations, marriage etc, yet life doesn’t feel so fulfilling.

I’ve always found it amazing when someone knows their life purpose at a young age while some of us never find it. Those that know, are very clear why they are here. They are rooted in purpose, with goals to obtaining and maintaining their ‘dream’. They don’t give up. They go after it with all their heart and soul.

Others, never look for a purpose. They’ve never developed that bigger sense of believing life has more to offer. They are happy to live day to day without any introspection and may not even believe that having a clear vision is even necessary. Philosophy about their life isn’t one of their main conversations going on in their heads.

However, some of us know we have a purpose, but spend a great part of our life searching for it. This is where Jack Canfield, Success Coach, helps out. Now as a Certified Jack Canfield Trainer, I too carry on Jack’s belief that we can be anyone or thing we want, as long as we know why we are here. When we know, our life surrounds this bigger mission. Everything we do is because of this purpose. It has value and is connected to the reason why we breathe.

If you are struggling with ‘why you are here’, take the time to try a couple of life purpose exercises, or meditate. In our hearts, we know our purpose because It is surrounded by joy. Follow that joy and you will find the reason why you were put on this earth.

Find Your Life Purpose
V

Success Principle #1 – Take Responsibility!

You have the power to make anything happen. So, why haven’t you? Find out what Jack Canfield says about it.

National Bestseller, Jack Canfield, provides 63 success principles in his book, The Success Principles: How to Get from Where you are to Where you want to Be.

His first principle, which is the foundation for the remaining 62 principles, is that we must take 100% responsibility for our life. The only person responsible for ensuring that you have a life of happiness, a career that is satisfying, successful relationships, and achieving everything else you want in life, is YOU.

Too often many people blame others for their ‘status’ in life such as a wandering husband for your marriage break-up, a less than honorable employer for your termination, delinquent children for your exhaustion, your in-laws for the trouble in your relationship with your wife, and so on. We blame our problems on someone outside of ourselves, when in actual fact, YOU, are the common denominator in every situation or event you don’t like.

This pointing the figure at ourselves and taking responsibility for everything that happens to us, is very difficult to do. It is so much easier to blame someone else for our lot in life.

Jack says that we need to also give up all of our excuses and complaining as to why we aren’t living the life we want, why we don’t have the man of our dreams or the job we think we deserve. He further states that you need to give up your excuses, your victim stories, all the reasons why you can’t and haven’t done something you’ve always wanted. You have the power to make anything happen. So, why haven’t you?

Everything that you experience is because of the choices we have made in our life. If you don’t like where you are at, make different choices. You are either creating or allowing everything to happen, to you. Sometimes we allow things to happen to us by our inactions or unwillingness to change.

One of the ways to do achieve a different outcome is to change your response to the situation or event until you get the desired results. All too often we respond the same way over and over again and wonder why we end up exactly in the same spot, time and time again.

For instance, if you always get frustrated when your husband goes golfing with his buddies every Tuesday afternoon, try not getting frustrated. Instead, call the girlfriends over, have a special afternoon planned for yourself or better yet, take yourself out for a fun evening. When you and your husband return from your afternoon of fun with friends, you’ll both feel happier for having gone out.

You have control over 3 things in your life; the thoughts you think, the images you see, and the actions you take. If you don’t like your thoughts, or the images or the results, change your responses. It’s all up to you – no one else.

Coach, Mentor, Consultant – Who am I?

We’ve all heard titles like ‘coach’ or ‘mentor’, etc. but what do they really mean? More importantly, what do they offer and why would you need one.

In today’s time, there are a lot of ‘titles’ that have little meaning or better yet, bring about ambiguity in what people really do for a living. If you appreciate the work of Robin Sharma, his book, The Leader Who Had No Title, comes to mind when I spend time trying to define what I do for a living. I’m apt to side with Robin that, leaders don’t need a title, but businesses love to give titles to their employees – some tell you exactly what they do for their job, such as Chicken Feather Plucker to Wellness Coordinator that has nothing to do with Wellness.

I’ve been reading many articles on the title ‘Coach’ these days and I’m disappointed that this is considered a vague title – now, of course, you need to preface this title with the type of coaching you do, but still it remains vague to many people.

Although my present title is ‘Founder/Workplace Health Strategist’, I’m more inclined to just remove the title altogether. For 15 years I called myself a Disability Consultant, which worked very well since it was a niche career but not so much anymore. That title seems to have been destroyed by many.

Zak Slayback, in his Linkedin article describes the differences between mentors, advisors and coaches.

Tony Robbins gives us his version of the difference between coaching and therapist.  As Tony says, “Therapists help clients explore and understand their subconscious and unconscious mind. Their goal in this exploration is deep understanding. Life coaches focus on results and actions. Their goals can be measured with key performance indicators and specific behavioral outcomes and goals”.

There are lots of opinions and lots of choices. For now, let me tell you what I do, then you can call me anything you want (well, almost anything) as long as you can remember my name, and understand what I do, I’m happy without the title.

For years, I’ve been a Disability Consultant as I stated earlier. For as many years, I’ve presented numerous seminars, workshops and training programs but more recently, I received my Certification with Jack Canfield in the Success Principles. For those of you that don’t know Jack, he is the co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul and so many other books and is also known as a Success Coach (here is that title coach again). You can find more about Jack, here.

I digress. I do what Jack does for a living and for my projection of where I would be in 5 years (part of Jack’s Breakthrough to Success Program), I called myself ‘Jackie’ Canfield. The skills I have learned from Jack are how to help others ‘get from where they are to where they want to be’. Call that a coach, mentor or consultant. – call it whatever you want, but this is me!

My expertise in working with corporations for over 2 decades, has given me the opportunity to provide this type of work at an organizational level, as well as personally. This work can help many managers, directors and leaders, transform their careers to even greater heights through personal development. Not only does their career gain momentum but, so does their personal life.

If you and your organization are looking for avenues to increase productivity, sales and accomplishments from your team, arrange a workshop date with me.

Life’s Journey

Definitely no destination is in mind when we talk and write about life’s journey. It has a multitude of turns, u-turns and detours. Some refer to it as a spiral of sorts; others a winding road. Whatever you want to call it, it definitely isn’t a straight line. Sometimes it would be much easier if it was a straight line, but maybe boring, which can only be said after it is all done.

When you think you got it all figured out, you know, those days when clarity is your friend, then something or someone steps on your path to make you question everything you’ve believed up to this point, despite the minutes or the months it has taken you to get here. So frustrating!

Go with it, the universe says. Get out of your own way says the wind. Stop thinking and analyzing says your family and friends. Oh! What to do, say I, while I pull my hair out and sit in a catatonic state.

Some days it feels like I’m in this vortex – black hole, if you wish, that is just going to swallow me up. Other days, I feel like I’ve been sitting in the same spot, literally for days if not months on ends. This is painful!

I have to say though, when you get past this vortex or catatonic state, you can say it was all worth it because you’ve managed to get to some ‘destination’ in your life that feels like progress! Yes, progress!

Yes! This is life! The ups and downs and the good and the bad like a roller coaster ride.  To be perfectly honest it’s the only way to live life. If you were constantly down, that would be sad and if you were constantly up, it would be exhausting. The ride keeps the emotions moving so you can feel your own pulse and know without a doubt that you are among the living.

I have to say though that you want that pulse to be strong and thumping. You want to feel the rush of emotions; the joy, the happiness and the feeling of success; the kind of feeling that makes you want to dance right then and there. Who cares who’s looking? Who cares if they judge? Who cares what they think? All that matters is that here you are on the other side of not knowing where your life’s journey is taking you, to the absolute most amazing feeling in the world – I’ve made it. The feeling deep down in your soul that says, ‘yep, this is it’! This is where and what I’ve meant to be doing my whole life. When the universe sends you that message, you’ll know without a doubt, you’ve returned home, to where you belong.

Life's Journey

It’s Okay to be Vulnerable

I think we are all vulnerable – especially to what scares us the most. Whether this be the potential for true love, a career that we would love to have or just to be ourselves, each and every day. It is our vulnerability that keeps us stuck, when our heart truly wants what is right in front of us. Often, we are too scared to reach out and grab it because it just seems too far or too unattainable or more succinct, we don’t believe we deserve it.

I’ve struggled with vulnerability my whole life, like many of you have. I still do on some days. Anyone who tells you otherwise, isn’t being authentic. It’s okay to be vulnerable. It’s what makes us humans. What you do with it makes all the difference in the world.

Be scared all you want. Keep all the fears you have. Be vulnerable. Don’t tell anyone. Stay the course or better yet, do something about it. Tell only one person that understands how you could possibly feel. Get out of that rut and live the life you were meant to live all these years. Invest in your life by taking action.

It’s all too easy to stay the course. Why should we change? Life has been ‘fine’. No great highs and no great lows. Everyday is the same. Why rock the boat?

We rock the boat so we can live our life to the fullest. It’s so much easier to just keep going on the path of least resistance than it is to reach out and say, I want that, or I want him or I want… We think life is easier if we keep the stress out and our vulnerability in but it doesn’t offer us the best life possible. We exist versus living. We survive rather than thrive and we settle versus fighting for what we truly desire in our hearts.

Take your vulnerability on a ride of a lifetime. Invest in yourself and in a coach that can get you from where you are and what you have to where you want to be and what you wish for. Life ends way too quickly for some, and those of us still here, must excel to live a vibrant journey chasing our dreams well others have been denied that extra time. Don’t waste it settling for that rut I call vulnerability.

Coaching for You

We always want something different it seems. A new car, a new job, to win the lottery, to have children that excel in school – the list is unlimited. However not many of us are not willing to work at something long and hard. We want it to be easy. Accomplishing our life’s goals or dreams, or wanting to be happier requires effort. ‘Nothing good comes easy’, so I hear.

For me, I’ve always had a coach of one type or another by my side. It’s not that I’m unmotivated to achieve my goals, but the support has been invaluable. A business coach, a spiritual coach, a life purpose coach and more lately, a transformational coach are some of the ones that I have chosen on my journey. The times in my life where I was ‘winging it alone’ were the times that I felt I was going in circles – circles in my head and circles in my life’s direction. You know, just like the hamster on his little wheel; pedalling fast but going nowhere.

A few times I have used a therapist or a counsellor when coaching wasn’t even heard of as a profession. This approach didn’t allow me to necessarily think for myself, or choose the direction of my journey. There were too many judgments, suggestions and opinions that didn’t allow me to ‘feel’ what was right for me. You know, that gut feeling we all have but ignore.

We all know what is good for us. Sometimes you can go through periods in life, short or long, where you question everything and nothing seems to be going where you want it to go. I’ve found these times were from a lack of clarity, within myself. The answers I know were inside of me, but I couldn’t hear them for the lack of peace, harmony and faith.

Sometimes the answers become clear in one session! Sometimes it takes longer but there is always the greatest sense of inspiration when you work with someone that has no agenda but to see YOU succeed! You know you are capable. You know you can do anything. Nothing is hard but that which is in our minds. If you want life altering changes, book a session with me – I’ll help you along your journey with passion, and you will never again feel resigned that this is all you can do or be! You are ready for this!

I’d love to help you set your goals and reach them with ease! I will customize a program specifically for your needs and plan out how we will surpass your wildest dreams!! Schedule a Meet & Chat with me, I can’t wait to talk to you!

Challenge Yourself!

If you’ve been keeping up with my blogs, you will remember that I wrote about whether or not one change in your life could make a difference. Here’s the latest news!

Oh my goodness! I’m thinking I have to change my answer to YES! One little change in your daily routine can change your life. You’ve got to try it!  I started off with:

Week 1 & 2 – ½ hour walk after a ½ meditation and grateful journal writing

Week 3 & 4 – I’ve moved up to a one hour with meditation and writing

The first day of week 5, I decided to tackle some stairs that I noticed as I was walking during week 3 & 4. This was my next challenge. Not only did I notice but I told someone I was going to do it. I obviously told the wrong person because he kept asking when the big day was. I think we call them our accountability partner. Yep, a pain in the butt brother really but nevertheless a long distance coach all the way from Manitoba.

Crazy right?

Here are some of the pictures just to show you how many I did.

I thought I was finished when I saw the bridge (81 stairs done). You know those kinds of stairs where it’s open and you can see everything underneath it and as you climb higher and higher your fear of heights kick in. Yep those are the ones! The ones you avoid always, always, always.

I’m looking at the bridge with a dozen more stairs. I look underneath and I’m thinking to myself ‘I can’t do this’. What if I fall, pass out, trip, or lose my phone no less. Then this quiet little voice says, ‘you got this Lucie’.

Yep, I did it! And guess what was on the other side? More bloomin’ stairs! This I was not anticipating. As I stood on the bridge and took a picture of Guelph, I thought about turning around and going back to where I came from. First of all, there were more stairs in front of me, but I also didn’t know where I was. I’m relatively new to Guelph and the street above the remainder of the stairs was unknown territory. Well it seemed to be a day of challenges so off I go to climb in total, 101 stairs.

I found my way home 10 minutes later to climb another 25 stairs to get into my condo.  I would have thought that I’m totally done in but the success of the challenge has me motivated to work, do more, accomplish more rather than flopping on the sofa. It’s a good thing I disconnected cable months ago because flicking on the TV would have been my next move.

Today’s challenge reminded me of my trip to Peru. It was the only vacation I took that I lost weight because of all the stair climbing we did. Everything was on a mountain – climbing was the only way you got there, especially when you got to Machu Picchu. Learn more about Peru here!

As I’m writing this though, I decided to look up the definition of stairs – a set of steps leading from one floor to another – in this case for me, a set of steps leading from one accomplishment to another.  If you haven’t challenged yourself lately, try something new or follow me along on my walks. Just pick that one little thing that you’ve been thinking of doing for a long time, and set a date for tomorrow, and DO IT because you can!

I’d love to help you set your goals and reach them with ease! I will customize a program specifically for your needs and plan out how we will surpass your wildest dreams!! Schedule a Meet & Chat with me, I can’t wait to talk to you!

Change One Thing

Like everyone else, there are days or months that I feel in a rut! You know – always doing the same thing everyday.  I feel like I’m coasting in life but no rollercoaster rides. Sometimes the ups and downs we can do without but sometimes they are needed just to remind us we are alive!

I’ve read many books over the years, and listened to many motivational speakers. I hear them often say, if you want to change your life, change ONE thing you do every day. It’s a kickstart into wanting to climb out of that rut. That sounds like work

I decided to test that silly thought that I could get a different life with changing just one thing! They aren’t exactly correct.

Changing one thing in my everyday routine hasn’t changed my life per se but it has given me a different perspective.

It has allowed for more creativity as in, what am I going to change next. Now I’m not talking about a total revamp of everything (I did that over 2 years ago) but I’m talking about getting up ½ hour earlier to do something extra for your self.

For those of you that think getting up ½ hour earlier than you normally do isn’t going to happen you should book a Discovery Session with me. Being self employed and being your own boss allows you to live the life you want, set that alarm clock or not and choose your daily schedule of work or play.

Changing that one thing has made me realize that my life could be different; that I could accomplish whatever I want; spend the day with a friend, or lie in bed longer with my love – whatever I decide, it’s all good. It’s a small start to wanting my life to be different. No huge heroic effort is needed here. I’m happy because with huge effort, sometimes comes disappointment that I’ve taken on something bigger than I’m capable of mastering. The smaller change of one thing in my daily routine has helped begin the journey to a different life:  One that I am the master of.

Try it for yourself and you will see what I mean.

Here is what I’ve done. I naturally wake up at 0600 hours – meditate and write in a journal of all the people and things in life that I’m grateful for. I’ve always done this – well, for years anyways. Lately I decided to challenge my fitness level – or lack thereof. I walk by 0700 hours. I started with ½ hour and now 2 weeks later, I’m at one hour of walking BEFORE I do any work or talk to anyone or look at any electronic device.  Due to this small change, I actually do feel better and I’m able to focus on getting that work done, with lots of energy left over to do what my heart desires, outside of work.

So, maybe my life has changed because of that one thing!

Schedule a chat with me, even if you aren’t quite ready to create a complete transformation, I can help you change just one thing! Book a discovery session with me!

Forks in the Road

There have been times in my life where I’ve been at a fork in the road. It hasn’t always been the most pleasant of destinations, unfortunately. For those of you who have been there, you can understand and relate to this.

The fork in the road is where crucial, life decisions are made; do I leave or do I stay in a job, a relationship, a city, or a home? I’ve always found them to be life altering IF you take one of the paths in front of you.

There have been times where I’ve sat at that fork in the road and chose not to make a decision, which is a decision in itself. When I look back now, I realize the decision, no matter how long I wanted to avoid making it, came either with my eventual choosing or with the force from the universe.  One way or another, the intended road, whether you were ready for it or not comes and it’s not always in the form of gentleness.  Sometimes I’ve been surprised by the level of vulnerability that it leaves me in. And then I realize that no matter when the decision was made, whether I made it for myself or not, it was indeed the path that was meant for me.

The path had lessons, sometimes years of lessons before I met up to that fork in the road once again. At times I’ve realized that I may have saved myself some additional heart ache, or experiences I would have preferred to avoid, and then the reality is, the time wasn’t right for me to make that choice, then. Nor did I have the strength to make that choice.

Here I am, today, knowing that all my choices have brought me to this space in my life – some of it amazing and some of it mediocre. Today, I realize that choices for a great life are always available.

I realize all those life lessons I should have learned from, but at times, I easily forget when caught up in the whirlwind of life. Everyday though, I marvel at the strength I have to continue my dream of being a business woman, and even though I’ve been tempted several times to get a job, I realize that my dreams die with this level of conformity.

Inside of me, I can hear the thumping of my heart, beating quietly for dreams I have accomplished, and dreams that remain on my vision board of life. Being a business woman is one that always remains and is forever engrained in my being. I wouldn’t trade one moment of this self-employment ride for a 9-5 job. I know in the end, when that fork in the road materializes – take a job to pay the bills or work harder at the business – the business woman in me will prevail. It’s a calling that excites me each and every day.

Schedule a chat with me, even if you aren’t quite ready to start your own business. Keep your passion alive by taking small steps towards its conception. You won’t regret it!
